What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), is one of the most frequently occurring gastrointestinal disorders accounting for 41% of all visits to gastrointerology practices. Sometimes called spastic colitis or nervous colon, common symptoms may include cramping, bloating and alternating diarrhea and constipation. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome have been found to be almost three times more likely to miss work (13.4 vs. 4.9 days) than someone without lBS.

What Can I Do About Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The exact cause of lBS is not known. Therapies that include dietary changes and nutritional support often help. Significant changes in dietary habits and elimination of common foods that cause allergies (refined carbohydrates, dairy or lactose, and sugars) may reduce lBS symptoms.

Western Herbs

Supporting the bowels generally fall into one of four categories:

Anti-spasmodic herbs such as: skullcap, peppermint, chamomile relax and calm the bowels.

Astringent herbs such as: cranberry, tone and restrict tissue mucosal discharges.

Carminative herbs such as: peppermint, fennel, chamomile reduce gas and bloating.

Demulcent (anti-inflammatory) herbs such as: slippery elm, fenugreek can help reduce irritation and inflamed tissue.

Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs have been traditionally used to soothe; calm and support the bowel. These herbs include: ginger, chinese licorice, magnolia, goldenthread, job’s tear, white peony and korean ash. Many chinese herbs have anti-spasmodic, astringent, carminative and demulcent properties.

Other General Supplements That Can Help With Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Fiber-absorbs water and can be beneficial in patients with diarrhea.

L-Glutamine- is an amino acid that helps in the replication of intestinal cells.

Probiotics - (l.acidophilusfbifidus) help restore healthy intestinal environment and bowel functions.
